Eight local students to compete for a spot at Skills Ontario's auto-tech competition

This weekend, eight students from four Sault Ste. Marie and area high schools will come together to vie for a first place finish in the inaugural Auto Service Technician Competition taking place at Sault College. The competition, which is a joint initiative between Sault College and the Algoma District School Board, will give participants the opportunity to highlight their skills and knowledge in the Automotive Service Technician field.

As an added incentive, the first place competitor will represent ADSB, along with 28 other ADSB students competing in various sectors, at the Skills Ontario Provincial Competition taking place at the Toronto Congress Centre on May 7!

The student representatives from Korah, Superior Heights, White Pines and Central Algoma are all enrolled in Transportation Technology courses at each high school and many of them are also in Co-operative Education placements at local Auto Shops.

During the competition, students will compete in the following eight areas: Automotive Components Measurements, Automotive Component/Tools & Equipment ID, Braking System, Suspension system, EFI/Fuel System, Engine Performance/Drivability (Code), Automotive Lighting, and an Automotive Technical Knowledge written test. Students will have 30 minutes to complete each challenge.

“The Auto Service Technician competition is the result of an amazing collaboration between Sault College and ADSB,” said Stephen Kent, Motive Power Coordinator and Professor, Sault College and Competition Organizer. “Our staff is passionate about the work they do and this is one way we can help to spark that passion in the next generation. This competition will help prepare students for further work in the trades industry and we are honoured to play an important role in providing this opportunity to students.”

“The Algoma District School board is pleased to partner with Sault College on this exciting new competition which will benefit both students and their future employers. As High School Technological Education students, these students are on a great career path. Locally and across Canada, employers are desperate for tradespeople. By taking Technological Education classes in high school and making a connection with Sault College, these students are learning some real hands-on, problem-solving skills that are going to serve them well for future jobs in the skilled trades.
