City Council is expected to rename Centennial Library as the James L. McIntyre Centennial Library, recognizing the unfailing civic involvement of a former mayor.

The new name is on the agenda for Monday's council meeting.

McIntyre was mayor from 1960 to 1964.

He died on Feb. 11, 2015.

In an inaugural address delivered after his 1963 re-election, Mayor McIntyre expressed hope that work would proceed soon on a new downtown library and Civic Centre, suggesting that the library be undertaken as a centennial project using building funds available for Canada's 100th birthday.

Other projects undertaken during Mayor McIntyre's tenure included the new Civic Centre, Old Stone House, waterfront development and the bridge plaza.

"There are many fitting facilities which could appropriately be named in his honour," says Rachel Tyczinski, deputy city clerk.

The McIntyre family supports the library naming recognition.

Also at Monday's meeting, Jason Naccarato will be sworn in as new president of the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce.

The City Council meeting will be livestreamed on SooToday on Monday starting at 4:30 p.m.
