City Meat Market, a locally owned and operated landmark business on Queen Street East, is up for sale.

The downtown core business has been run by meat cutter John Bruni and his wife Rosina since 2005.

Bruni, a senior, has decided it’s time to hang up his butcher’s knife.

“I’m trying to retire. That’s all it is. Businesses don’t sell overnight. It takes time, so that's why I put it up for sale now,” Bruni told SooToday on Friday.

He added that he would be pleased if the new owners - whoever they may be - continue to operate the building as a butcher’s shop and grocery store.

“Yes, I would like to see that if it’s possible,” Bruni said.

Such businesses are scarce in the Sault’s downtown core.

City Meat Market, apart from selling bacon, beef, pork chops, sirloin steak and homemade sausage, sells fresh vegetables, eggs, maple syrup and coffee, mostly from Sault and area producers.

Bruni also makes his own bread, pasta, meatballs and sauce, as well as offering meat, pork and turkey pies and specialty burgers.

The business also offers delivery and catering.

John and Rosina Bruni will be missed by their regular customers.

“When we make our sauce and everything else, it’s like we’re making it for our own family, because our family eats the same food that we sell, so the quality has to be number one. Our customers have become our friends. It’s pretty special,” Rosina Bruni told SooToday in 2019.

John and Rosina Bruni are the latest owners of City Meat Market, the business established in 1910.

The City Meat Market building, located in the 800 block of Queen St. E., has two additional commercial spaces on the ground floor with three residential units on the second floor.

Listed by Remax broker Roy Bortolussi, the building is up for sale for $1.3 million.
