Downtown Association supports Pita Pit project

SooToday.com has received the following note from the Downtown Association in response to our article from earlier today titled Pita Pit CEO responds to tree-felling concerns.

************************* The Downtown Association would like the opportunity to respond to information published in a recent SooToday.com article.

The article entitled, “Pita Pit CEO responds to tree-felling concerns,” initially referred to Alison Walton as the president of the Downtown Association.

In addition, the article states that Ms. Walton "is now launching a personal campaign to protect the Sault’s urban forests..."

For clarification purposes, Alison Walton is the past president of the Downtown Association, and we appreciate your efforts to update this fact in your article.

In addition, please note, this is Ms. Walton’s personal campaign; it has not been supported nor endorsed by the Downtown Association.

The Downtown Association does support greening initiatives as evidenced by our support for the Gateway Site Park.

However, safety and structural issues must be taken into consideration as well.

And according to the article, city officials believed that many of the trees were in fact not healthy.

In addition, Matt Di Flumeri indicated that his plans for the courtyard include landscaping and new greenery.

The site has been for sale for a number of months and we are pleased that it has been sold (to a downtown member) with plans to renovate the building and create a courtyard with new greenery.

We support projects that help keep our downtown both healthy and active and believe this project will benefit both Pita Pit and the downtown community.
