The Dow Jones industrial index bounced back more than 400 points in the last hour before it closed today.
Other markets showed a similar rise.
Analysts are saying the increase is in response to today's commitment by the United States Federal Reserve to keep its benchmark interest rate a record low for at least the next two years in a bid to revive the ailing economy.
