NEW RELEASE

OPP SUPERIOR EAST DETACHMENT

************************* Increased traffic enforcement during long weekend by Superior East OPP

During the Civic Holiday Weekend, officers from the Superior East OPP Detachment will be conducting high visibility enforcement on the roadways within and around Wawa, Chapleau, White River and Hornepayne.

Particular attention will be given to Highway 17 between Wawa and White River.

Last year, Wawa and White River officers investigated five fatal motor vehicle collisions resulting in nine fatalities along this stretch of roadway.

It is the goal of the OPP to reduce motor vehicle collisions through increased enforcement.

Drinking and driving, aggressive driving and fatigue continue to be a major cause of accidents.

RIDE and seatbelt checks will be conducted throughout the weekend.

As of July 22, 2007, 245 people have died on roadways patrolled by the Ontario Provincial Police.

Of those fatalities, 81 were a result of speeding, 63 people were not using seatbelts and 38 have died in alcohol-related collisions.

People using the area waterways are also reminded to use personal flotation devices and to ensure their vessels have the proper safety equipment on board.
