Sault Ste. Marie City Council gave a rare standing ovation tonight to Donna Pearl Irving on the occasion of her last council meeting before she retires Friday after 14 years as City clerk.

Irving was universally praised tonight for her fairness, calm demeanour and professionalism.

"I don't know that I've ever seen you in a bad mood," commented Ward 2 Councillor Terry Sheehan.

"You're like a white Tina Turner," gushed Ward 3 Councillor Byran Hayes. "Simply the best."

Irving started working for the City as a secretary and was promoted to City Clerk in 1996.

She figures she's endured almost 400 City Council meetings.

Irving will be replaced by Malcolm White, currently deputy City clerk and manager of quality improvement.
