************************* New Democrats plan for affordable change helping drivers in the North

IROQUOIS FALLS - Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says New Democrats will help drivers confront the unique challenges of getting around in the North.

She was joined by John Vanthof, NDP candidate for Timiskaming-Cochrane.

“Northerners face longer winters, longer drives and much higher costs. It’s time for government to recognize the unique challenges facing Northerners,” said Horwath. “We can start by giving Northern communities more support to make long overdue repairs on roads and bridges and giving Northern drivers relief at the pumps.”

Last week Horwath addressed the Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference where she promised help for Northern municipalities with dependable infrastructure funding.

“Northern communities have a big problem you can’t afford to ignore. New Democrats don’t expect you to pay for crumbling bridges and wrecked roads on your own. You need help from the province and that’s why we’re committing 70 million dollars a year so that you can get going on these long overdue repairs.”

The NDP’s plan for affordable change also proposed measures to get gasoline prices under control.

Vantof added, “We’ll start rolling back the HST on gas and ease the pain at the pump by introducing a weekly cap on gas prices.”

“Over the last eight years life’s gotten a lot harder in the North. New Democrats are committed to change that will make life more affordable in the North,” said Horwath.
