The iconic actor broke into Hollywood after appearing in the films Rebel Without a Cause and Giant along side James Dean.

Despite creative differences with co-star/ co-writer Peter Fonda, allegations of drug and alcohol abuse, and the termination of his marriage to Brooke Hayward, Hopper received massive critical acclaim for his directorial debut film Easy Rider.

The film earned Hopper an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay, a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for best drama written directly for the screen, a Directors Guild of America Award nomination for outstanding directing, and won him the best first film work award at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival.

Hopper's other numerous film appearances include Cool Hand Luke, Hang 'Em High, True Grit, Apocalypse Now, Rumble Fish, Blue Velvet, Hoosiers, True Romance, Speed and Swing Vote.

Hopper was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in late October of 2009.

The disease had metastasized to his bones by January of this year and was untreatable.

On March 26, Hopper was honoured at a ceremony during which his name was added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Hopper was 74 years old and leaves behind four children.
