Decrepit Sault hospital site featured in new YouTube video

Plans to redevelop former general hospital into condos and a long-term care facility have not materialized, leaving structure in serious state of disrepair

A new YouTube video is giving viewers a rare glimpse into just how decrepit the former general hospital site in Sault Ste. Marie has become.

The 47-minute video — Exploring a Huge Abandoned Hospital that has Been Ravaged by Time!! — shows a tour of the site, revealing the ruins of a structure that appears to be very much past its prime.

The buildings and land that comprise the old General and Plummer Hospital sites are currently owned by Leisure Meadows Community Living Inc., a corporation based in Vaughan, Ont. that lists Mike Anobile as president. Leisure Meadows purchased the properties in May 2019 for a combined $1.3-million, with plans to redevelop the waterfront land into condominiums and a long-term care facility.

The public face of Leisure Meadows is general manager Italo Ferrari, a Woodbridge, Ont. developer who has travelled to the Sault numerous times to trumpet the company’s much-publicized plans.

The land appears to be for sale, along with two adjacent properties — 10 Lucy Terrace and the Doctor’s Building at 955 Queen St. — that are also linked to Anobile. Along with being president of Leisure Meadows, Anobile is also president of the numbered company that owns the two neighbouring properties.
