Debbie, Richard, Michelle and Elizabeth raise the flag

Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Debbie Amaroso joined Algoma University President Richard Myers, his wife and co-worker Michelle Atkin and their daughter Elizabeth at the Civic Centre Wednesday morning for the United Way Sault Ste.

Sault Ste. Marie Mayor Debbie Amaroso joined Algoma University President Richard Myers, his wife and co-worker Michelle Atkin and their daughter Elizabeth at the Civic Centre Wednesday morning for the United Way Sault Ste. Marie's third annual flag-raising ceremony.

Myers and Atkins are co-chairs of the United Way Sault Ste. Marie's 2014 campaign, which kicked off on Friday.

This year's campaign is a little different.

Instead of a financial goal, the goal this year is to help 12,000 people.

Research shows 12,000 people in the Sault are assisted by one of the many programs and agencies United Way supports.

This year's campaign progress will be tracked with a mural of different people in the community, including seniors, children and youth.

The United Way banner will fly at the Civic Centre throughout October.
