Kofi Annan, former secretary-general of the United Nations, announced this morning that a deal has been reached to end political violence that has killed about 1,500 since a disputed election last December.

Annan made the announcement of a coalition government after a four-hour meeting with Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and Opposition Leader Raila Odinga.
