Sault College announces three new academic deans

Sault College is strengthening its commitment to its students and academic programming with the announcement of three new Academic Deans.

Each of the new Dean positions came after a thorough organizational review of the Academic Division, which led to the creation of three new schools: School of Health and Community Services, School of Aviation, Trades and Technology, Natural Environment and Business and School of Indigenous Studies and Academic Upgrading.

After a thorough recruitment process, Sault College is pleased to announce the promotion of two internal candidates and the appointment of one external candidate to lead these new Schools.

Marilyn King assumes the role of Dean, Health and Community Services. Marilyn is a 16-year Sault College employee and Registered Nurse, who holds a Masters of Science Degree from Northern Michigan University.

Marilyn has been involved in nursing education since 1997 at a variety of postsecondary institutions and for the last 10 years has served as Chair of the College’s Health programs.

Marilyn is actively involved in scholarship through research and continues to lead various presentations at local, provincial and international health conferences.

Locally, Marilyn is involved in various nursing and health related committees and also served as the President of the Sault Chapter, Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Carolyn Hepburn, a 13-year staff member of the College, has been promoted to Dean, Indigenous Studies and Academic Upgrading from her Directorship of the same portfolio.

Carolyn has played an integral role in advancing our native studies programs and elevated our stature as one of the preeminent indigenous institutions in the province.

She has been a leading voice in assisting the College in implementing recommendations from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and in the signing of the National Indigenous Education protocol.

Carolyn’s work has been exemplary in helping the College pursue a renewed relationship with First Nations, Metis and Inuit peoples in moving forward in a spirit of trust and collaboration.

Carolyn has also helped significantly grow the number of indigenous students who are participating in post-secondary education at Sault College.

David Orazietti will join the College as the Dean of Aviation, Trades and Technology, Natural Environment and Business.

David is well-known in our community as our Member of Provincial Parliament and cabinet Minister, holding both the Natural Resources and Government and Consumer Services portfolios, and most recently, as the minister responsible for Community Safety and Correctional Services.

Prior to his 13 successful years in provincial politics, David was a well-respected City Councillor, a teacher, Department Head, and OSSTF Local Union President at the Algoma District School Board.

David has Ontario Teaching Qualifications and holds a Masters of Education, Administration and Curriculum from Nipissing University.

This four-year plan builds on six strategic priorities and has been designed to ensure Sault College continues to be the premier student-centered post-secondary institution in the Province.
