McGuinty government partners with local conservation authority to make Sault Ste. Marie’s water safer

SAULT STE. MARIE - The McGuinty government is partnering with the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority to help ensure safe and sustainable drinking water with a $371,543 investment David Orazietti, MPP announced today.

“Through our investments and new legislation we have made a firm commitment to help ensure that residents of Sault Ste. Marie continue to have access to clean, safe drinking water,” said Orazietti. “Today’s announcement will help conservation authorities continue the important work of coordinating source water protection planning for our community.”

Since 2004 the Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority has received over $2 million from the McGuinty government for source water protection planning and infrastructure.

Under the Drinking Water Source Protection partnership, the government provides support and funding for studies, data collection, local engagement, information management and other activities related to municipal drinking water sources.

“Since 2005, the Ministries of Environment and Natural Resources have provided funding to assist conservation authorities in support of drinking water source protection,” said Natural Resources Minister Donna Cansfield. “This is all part of our work to fully implement the Clean Water Act.”

“The Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority is pleased to receive this funding from the Ministry of Natural Resources to continue our core mandate for the Drinking Water Source Protection program,” said Rhonda Bateman, drinking water source protection planning coordinator.
