Province’s Homework Help program teaches important skills and increases test scores

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - The province’s Homework Help program, which is a free, confidential, real-time math tutoring service, is expanding to provide 5,403 students in Grades 7 to 10 from the Huron Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) and the Algoma District School Board (ADSB) with access to the program’s resources, David Orazietti, MPP announced today.

“Our government’s expansion of this very successful tutoring program will include thousands of students from the two major local school boards and provide greater support for kids who may need some extra help in difficult subjects, such as mathematics,” said Orazietti. “We believe that it is crucial to give students every possible opportunity to learn these important skills and this excellent online resource connects certified teachers with kids seeking help in math so they can improve their test scores.”

This year’s program expansion will provide 1,719 students in 27 schools at the HSCDSB access to Ontario’s Homework Help program.

The ADSB, which offered the program last year, will also assist 3,684 students in 60 ADSB schools this year.

There are 31 school boards offering the program this year at schools in Ontario.

“Homework Help is a great tool for our students to access and they are very much at ease in utilizing this technology in helping them comprehend mathematics,” said John Stadnyk, HSCDSB director of education. “We have already had positive feedback from students about the benefits of the Homework Help program.”

“The ministry’s support for our participation in the Homework Help pilot means we can continue to reach and assist our students,” said Mario Turco, ADSB director of education. “Homework Help assists students and keeps them moving with direct contact with Math teachers. In addition to access to teachers, many of the features of the site are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is a critical tool and we’re pleased that so many of our students are able to access it.”

Homework Help is a free, confidential, real-time math tutoring service that connects certified Ontario teachers with students who need extra support.

The service also offers a number of resources that are available to students and parents at any time, including:

- Videos of best-practice tutorials

- Commonly asked questions

- Interactive math games

- A virtual locker, where students can save their work
