Provincial government investments helping to develop creative economy in Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE, ON - The Ontario government is investing $36,975 to support four local arts organizations in Sault Ste. Marie, David Orazietti, MPP said today.

"We recognize that supporting cultural institutions will enhance the quality of life for all local residents while helping our community attract and retain the talented workers necessary for economic success,” said Orazietti. “With this investment, our government is helping to ensure that these organizations have the resources they need to promote art appreciation in Sault Ste. Marie while fostering home grown talent.”

The McGuinty government, through the Ontario Arts Council, is providing the following:

- $8,375 to the Sault International Youth Association through the Arts Education Projects program toward its Fresh Art. The purpose of this project is to connect young at-risk and/or under-serviced youth with established artists who will teach writing and layout skills and mentor. Publication of the youth's work will be the final outcome of the project

- $9,000 to the Art in the Park-ing Lot Street Festival through the Multi-Arts Projects program toward Art in the Park-ing Lot. The event is described as a "summer arts festival by the public, for the public." It engages local artists, youth, as well as the community at large

- $7,000 to the Algoma Conservatory of Music through the Ontario Touring/Ontario Arts Presenters program toward its 19th season, including the presentation of seven concerts in Sault Ste. Marie with outstanding Canadian and international touring artists and ensembles

- $12,600 to the Sault Symphony Association through the Orchestras program toward the professional artistic costs of its six-concert series in 2010-11.

The Ontario Arts Council is the province of Ontario’s primary funding body for professional arts activity.

Since 1963, the Council has played a vital role in promoting and assisting the development of the arts and artists for the enjoyment and benefit of Ontarians.
