McGuinty government supporting social service agencies, creating jobs

SAULT STE. MARIE - The McGuinty government is providing $102,430 for infrastructure projects at social service agencies in Sault Ste. Marie David Orazietti, MPP announced today.

“This investment will help service providers improve their facilities and support vulnerable residents of Sault Ste. Marie, including children and community members with special challenges,” said Orazietti. “The infrastructure projects we are funding will also help create new jobs and provide a boost to the local economy.”

Through this provincial initiative, not-for-profit social service organizations in Sault Ste. Marie will receive funding for facility enhancements to improve accessibility, heating, aesthetics and other upgrades.

The $102,430 allotment for service providers in Sault Ste. Marie includes:

- $90,000 for Community Living Algoma

- $12,430 for Child Care Algoma.

“By improving aging facilities and creating local jobs, this investment will go a long way in helping many of Ontario’s most vulnerable children, youth and families,” said Laurel Broten, Minister of Children and Youth Services.

The local funding is part of a $50 million, province-wide investment over two years to support nearly 1,000 capital projects in communities across the province.

These projects will include expansions and renovations that will improve security, accessibility and energy efficiency at eligible social service facilities.

“The best way to improve Ontario’s economy is to invest in our people and our communities,” said Madeleine Meilleur, Minister of Community and Social Services. “Improving the health and safety, accessibility and energy efficiency of social service agencies creates jobs - and most importantly - hope.”

Investing in infrastructure is a critical part of Ontario’s plan to restore growth, save and create jobs in the short term, and build foundations for the future.

This investment is helping create 450 new jobs across the province at not-for-profit social service organizations.

Work on these projects will start in early 2010 and will be completed by March 31, 2011.
