SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS UNIT ********************** SIU investigates death in Chelmsford TORONTO (April 24, 2006) - The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is investigating the circumstances surrounding a collision between a vehicle and a cyclist that occurred on April 22, 2006, in Chelmsford.

At about 8:39 p.m. on that date, two Greater Sudbury Police Service officers in a marked cruiser were patrolling southbound on Errington Street when they saw two cars traveling at a high rate of speed.

The vehicles - a Chevrolet Cavalier and a Toyota Corolla - were travelling northbound on Errington and passed the cruiser.

The officer turned the cruiser around and about 1.5 kilometres away, found that the Corolla had collided with a cyclist.

The 16-year-old cyclist was taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

None of the occupants in the cars were seriously injured.

Two SIU investigators, including a collision reconstructionist, are probing what role, if any, the police played in the events surrounding the fatal collision. Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed this incident to contact the Unit at 416-622-1965 or 1-800-787-8529 x 1965.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates circumstances involving police and civilians which have resulted in serious injury, sexual assault or death.

Under Part VII, Section 113, of the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation.

The Director's decision is reported to the Attorney General. *********************
