CTV has cancelled its local news inserts during Canada AM across the country.

The cut, made on Tuesday of last week, is part of the network's ongoing efforts to reduce its operating expenses.

"The conventional TV business in Canada is in serious financial shape," says Debra Dawe, CTV marketing coordinator. "We unfortunately need to explore all cost-cutting measures to stabilize the business and continue to provide the best possible local service to our viewers."

CTV is asking the Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC) to allow it to receive a fee-for-carriage from the cable and satellite companies that distribute its signal.

"We are appearing in front of the CRTC April 27 to make our case to the regulator," says Dawe. "The survival of small-market television stations may be at stake."
