Sault Fire Services extinguished a fire in the gymnasium area in the now vacant, former St. Veronica Catholic School on East Balfour St. in the Sault’s west end early Monday.

There were no injuries or major damage, Sault Fire Services public education officer Aaron Gravelle told SooToday.

Sault Fire Services received the call at 2 a.m. Monday.

The cause of the fire is unknown but fire prevention officers are investigating, Gravelle said.

“It was mainly smoke but there was a small fire. Damage was minimal, it was mostly smoke and they ventilated the building,” Gravelle said.
