************************* Highway 17 serious motor vehicle collision - 3:55 p.m. update
SUDBURY - On May 26, 2011 at 1:09 p.m., officers from the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a motor vehicle collision on the four-lane section of Highway 17, at Regional Road 55, City of Greater Sudbury.
Preliminary investigation reveals a sport utility vehicle (SUV) was attempting to cross the intersection and was struck by an eastbound tractor-trailer.
The driver of the SUV suffered minor injuries and the passenger suffered serious injuries.
Subsequently, both occupants of the SUV were transported to Sudbury Regional Hospital.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
Officers are on-scene conducting their investigation with the assistance of two OPP technical traffic collision investigators.
The eastbound lanes of Highway 17 just east of Regional Road 55 will remain closed while officers continue their investigation.
It is unknown how long the highway will be closed.
A detour around the scene is available.
Motorists travelling eastbound on Highway 17 can take Regional Road 55 to Lively, ON and get back onto Highway 17 east.
The westbound lanes are not affected.
The investigation is continuing.
Motorists will be advised when the highway re-opens.
