Former Philippine President Corazon Aquino has died, her family announced today.

Aquino was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2008 and had recently announced her decision to stop treatment for the disease.

She served as the 11th president of the Philippines from 1986 to 1992 after the removal from power and eventual exile of President Ferdinand Marcos.

She was the Phillippines', and Asia's first female president.

Throughout her political career, Aquino advocated for peace and democracy, and became a world-wide symbol of empowerment for women.

In 1986 alone, Aquino appeared as Time Magazine's Woman of the Year, was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, and was awarded the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award, the United Nations Silver Medal, and the Canadian International Prize for Freedom.

Aquino was 76 years old.
