Construction of new Catholic elementary school falls behind

Holy Cross School will not be ready in time for the opening of the 2012-2013 school year learned Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board Trustees at a meeting on Wednesday evening.

Holy Cross School will not be ready in time for the opening of the 2012-2013 school year learned Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board Trustees at a meeting on Wednesday evening.

The school was slated to be completed in August and ready for students when the new school year began in September.

A firm date has not been set but the school is now expected to open in late-September at the earliest.

When classes open on Sept. 5, students who were slated to attend the new school will attend classes at either St. Mark or Sister Mary Clare schools.

Students in JK to grade 4 will attend classes at the current St. Mark site while students in grades 5 to 8 will attend Sister Mary Clare before moving into the new school.

Director of Education John Stadnyk said Wednesday night that the Algoma District School Board experience with Superior Heights played a role in the decision.

Superior Heights was not quite complete when students began classes at the Second Line campus in September 2012.

“We’re not quite sure it’s going to be 100 percent ready and don’t want to move the kids in and the staff prematurely. Based on (the Superior Heights) experience, making sure that we didn’t complicate things for the contractors, for the plant department that would have to get the last pieces ready, it was a lesson learned from the other experience,” said Stadnyk. “We just wanted to make sure that there’s no more construction going on when our staff and students are in there.”

Stadnyk added that progress is being made on the school and that much of the remaining work is on the interior of the building to get it ready for student use.

Holy Cross construction update

SAULT STE. MARIE: The Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB) is excited that the new Holy Cross Catholic Elementary school is nearing completion.

Through continued monitoring of the construction stages it has become apparent that the new school will not be fully ready for the start of the 2012-13 school year.

Therefore, the board is rescheduling the date for the move to the new school to the end of September or in the month of October 2012.

“To ensure a successful transition for our students and staff, our goal from the very beginning of this project was to move to Holy Cross when the new school was completely ready,” said Director of Education John Stadnyk.

Holy Cross Catholic School will be situated at two sites when classes begin on September 5, 2012.

JK to Grade 4 students will attend the current St. Mark site while students in Grades 5 through 8 will attend the current Sister Mary Clare site.

“We appreciate our school communities understanding the need to implement this alternative plan. We are committed to ensuring the best start up for all involved in the move to Holy Cross,” said Stadnyk.

The HSCDSB transportation department is arranging busing schedules and parents will be notified before the end of June.
