The U.S. Border Patrol is installing 11 new video surveillance towers along an extended stretch of the St. Clair River near Detroit.

Another five units will beef up Niagara River security in the Buffalo area.

The towers will help agents more effectively monitor traffic on the waterways and respond faster to suspicious activity.

Similar technology could be installed at other Canada-U.S. border locations in the future.

Users of the new units will help assess their suitability for cold-weather environments.

Meanwhile, the American Civil Liberties Union objects to the technology, claiming it invades citizens’ privacy.
