The following special weather statement has been issued overnight by Environment Canada for Marathon - Superior North - Wawa - White River - Pukaskwa - Kapuskasing - Hearst - Chapleau and other parts of Northeastern Ontario.

We've also included a hazardous weather outlook and flood watch issued for the Eastern Upper Peninsula by the U.S. National Weather Service, as well as an interesting note from faithful reader Ron Clarke in Regina.

*************************** A fresh blast of much colder Arctic air approaching for Sunday.

A cold front approaching from the west will move across the area north and east of Lake Superior Sunday.

Following the passage of the front, temperatures will quickly drop about 10 degrees and probably remain steady near minus 15 degrees during the day Sunday.

This sudden drop in temperatures will occur in the Manitouwadge - Hornepayne areas Sunday morning then in the afternoon further east.

Listen for further statements.

Additional information may also be found by consulting the latest public forecast.

**************************** THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR NORTHERN LOWER MICHIGAN, EASTERN UPPER MICHIGAN AND ADJACENT NEARSHORE WATERS OF LAKE MICHIGAN, LAKE HURON AND LAKE SUPERIOR.

DAY ONE, TONIGHT

SNOW AND FREEZING DRIZZLE IS POSSIBLE ACROSS NORTHERN MICHIGAN AFTER MIDNIGHT.

LIGHT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS MUCH OF NORTH CENTRAL AND NORTHEAST LOWER.

FREEZING DRIZZLE COULD CREATE SLIPPERY DRIVING CONDITIONS OVERNIGHT.

DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN - SUNDAY THROUGH FRIDAY.

FREEZING DRIZZLE IS POSSIBLE ACROSS NORTHERN MICHIGAN SUNDAY MORNING.

ACCUMULATING SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED ACROSS THE REGION MONDAY AND MONDAY NIGHT.

THIS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY A RETURN OF COLDER AIR AND ACCUMULATING LAKE EFFECT SNOWFALL IN THE SNOWBELTS OF NORTHWEST LOWER AND EASTERN UPPER TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY.

************************** ICE JAMS OCCURRING ACROSS NORTHERN MICHIGAN.

FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN GAYLORD HAS ISSUED A FLOOD WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF EASTERN UPPER MICHIGAN AND NORTHERN LOWER MICHIGAN INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING AREAS: IN EASTERN UPPER MICHIGAN, CHIPPEWA AND MACKINAC.

IN NORTHERN LOWER MICHIGAN: ALCONA, ALPENA, ANTRIM, ARENAC, BENZIE, CHARLEVOIX, CHEBOYGAN, CRAWFORD, EMMET, GLADWIN, GRAND TRAVERSE, IOSCO, KALKASKA, LEELANAU, MANISTEE, MISSAUKEE, MONTMORENCY, OGEMAW, OSCODA, OTSEGO, PRESQUE ISLE, ROSCOMMON AND WEXFORD.

THROUGH MONDAY AFTERNOON

RECENT HEAVY SNOWFALL AND COLD HAS FORMED ICE ON AREA RIVERS AND STREAMS.

MILD TEMPERATURES FROM SATURDAY AFTERNOON IN THE MID 30S, HAS ALLOWED ICE JAMS TO DEVELOP ACROSS SEVERAL OF NORTHERN MICHIGAN RIVERS.

MILD TEMPERATURES IN THE LOWER 30S WILL CONTINUE SUNDAY, WHICH WILL CONTINUE THE THREAT OF ICE JAM DEVELOPMENT INTO MONDAY.

ICE JAMS ARE VERY UNPREDICTABLE AND CAN BREAK UP, MOVE AND JAM AGAIN VERY QUICKLY.

WATER BACKING UP BEHIND THE JAM CAN FLOOD AREAS UNDER DEEP WATER WITH SURPRISING SPEED.

FAVORED ICE JAM LOCATIONS ARE WHERE A RIVER BENDS OR SLOWS, AT BRIDGE ABUTMENTS OR NEAR ISLANDS, SANDBARS AND OTHER OBSTRUCTIONS TO FLOW.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS.

A FLOOD WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR FLOODING BASED ON CURRENT FORECASTS.

YOU SHOULD MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND BE ALERT FOR POSSIBLE FLOOD WARNINGS.

THOSE LIVING IN AREAS PRONE TO FLOODING SHOULD BE PREPARED TO TAKE ACTION SHOULD FLOODING DEVELOP.

*************************** Hello, I'm a true and faithful reader of SooToday.com and never miss a day.

I am from the Soo but now live in Regina.

As of 7:45 p.m. tonight, Saturday, December 12, we have a wind chill of -48 Celcius and with the winds picking up it will probably hit -55 Celcius with no let-up for at least four days.

I was one of the musicians for the 18 Forever concert two years ago December 6 and remember the amount of snow that was on the ground when I landed at the airport.

Well with what's been happening in the weather news this week that was nothing.

A record was set here for the warmest November.

It was like spring for 30 days and then that all changed on December 1 as did different parts of Canada.

So much for global warming.

- Ron Clarke.
