Police tear down encampment at Gore and Albert (updated)

Several members of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service on scene as city crews wipe encampment clean

2:08 p.m. update: 

In a release issued Thursday afternoon, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service said that growing concerns around public safety and health led to the tear down of the encampment: 

On Thursday, July 28, 2022 at 0930hrs, Sault Ste Marie Police Services in conjunction with Social Services, Community Outreach, EMS and City Board of Works engaged in a clean-up of a developing encampment at the southeast corner of Gore Street and Albert Street East.

Growing concerns about public safety and health for area residents and those in the camp became paramount. Area was cleaned with out incident. No arrests or charges.

An encampment situated at the corner of Gore Street and Albert Street East has been wiped clean by the City of Sault Ste. Marie. 

City crews were seen removing the encampment Thursday morning as members of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service looked on. 

The forensics van and two crisis unit vehicles belonging to the police service were spotted at the scene.
