The City of Sault Ste. Marie is joining a network of Canadian municipalities committed to taking action to combat racism and discrimination.

At the March 21, 2014 City Council meeting, Mayor Debbie Amaroso signed a resolution to announce the City’s decision to become a member of the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities against Racism and Discrimination (CCMARD) and to work with 60 other municipalities united to fight racism and discrimination.

A Signing Ceremony will take place Friday, June 27, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the International Flags area located across from the Civic Centre (Russ Ramsay Way at Foster Drive).

The planting of a “Racial Harmony” tree as a symbol of Sault Ste. Marie’s commitment to a racism-free community, will be included as part of the Ceremony.

This event is open to the public.

CCMARD is part of the International Coalition of Cities against Racism, launched in March 2004 by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).

CCMARD encourages partnerships with and inclusion of various local partners and interested stakeholders, including educators, police, Aboriginal populations, representatives from various ethnocultural communities, and youth.
