Following four-and-a-half hours of deliberations tonight, Sault Ste. Marie City Council approved a $115 million budget adding up to a 3.54 per cent local tax hike.

The municipal portion of the increase is 2.55 per cent.

Outside agencies and levy boards accounted for 0.99 per cent.

Councillors approved a $25,000 increase in funding to the Sault Ste. Marie Museum and cut $129,000 from the Sault Ste. Marie Public Library’s budget.

The $129,000 corresponded to the entire operating budget of the Korah branch library, but councillors stressed that any decision on closing the Korah library must be made by the library board.

Further coverage will appear tomorrow on SooToday.
