The following resolution regarding Sault PUC's utility distribution microgrid project has been placed on the agenda of Monday's City Council meeting by Ward 1 councillors Steve Butland and Paul Christian.

PUC has been working since 2014 with Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre, Energizing Co. and Virginia-based engineering firm Leidos on an innovative software tool allowing utilities to analyze their power grid and make better choices about energy-related investment opportunities.

Monday's City Council meeting will be livestreamed on SooToday starting at 4:30 p.m.

Whereas PUC has been working on a utility distribution microgrid (UDM) project for three years and the project will require the approval and support of City Council to proceed if approved by the PUC board of directors;

Whereas the UDM project is a large project and City Council should have thorough information at its disposal to assess whether or not it will ultimately support the UDM project;

Whereas the PUC executive will present the technical aspects and costs of the UDM project to City Council including the risks and benefits from the PUC perspective;

Whereas the UDM project may have broader social, economic or developmental benefits and City Council should have an assessment of those prior to making its decision;

Now therefore, City Council directs the CAO to ensure that City Council receives a report from the city, with input from the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corp. and the Sault Ste. Marie Innovation Centre outlining whether or not there are any broader socio-economic or development benefits (or risks) of the UDM project.
