Chrysler says it will close all 30 of its manufacturing plants for a month when shifts end this Friday.
The production facilities will remain idle at least until January 19, 2009.
The company says dealers can't close sales for buyers in the U.S. because of constraints on credit.
With sales down 20 to 25 percent, Chrysler also claims it will have trouble paying bills in the new year.
