Children with learning disabilities benefit big

Northern Credit Union helps enhance and support the social and emotional wellbeing of children and youth with learning disabilities

SUDBURY –The Northern Credit Union donated $5,000 to the Northern Ontario Centre for Learning Differences (NOCLD) today. In support of NOCLD, Northern Credit Union launched a True North Strong Communities campaign titled We Are Not Alone and agreed to match the first $5,000 raised.

True North Strong Communities campaigns are an initiative of the Northern Credit Union and the first of their kind here in the North. Donations can be made online and there are no administration fees, which means that 100 per cent of the donations go directly to the campaigns.

“Northern is proud to partner with an organization that relates so well to our True North Strong brand. The NOCLD is about giving back and supporting individuals with learning disabilities and their families, to reach their full potential. Their community focus is something that Northern truly prides itself on and is happy to contribute to and be a part of,” said Al Suraci, CEO, Northern Credit Union.

The NOCLD is an organization tasked with the goal of increasing the reach of existing programs and services currently provided by the Learning Disabilities Association of Sudbury (LDAS) to the communities of North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins. This campaign was established so that the NOCLD can support parents and families of children and youth with learning disabilities right across Northern Ontario. This support will lead to success in educational pursuits and in finding meaningful employment in the future.

“We are very grateful for this generous donation from Northern Credit Union,” said Mary-Liz Warwick, Executive Director of the NOCLD. “With the establishment of the NOCLD last year, we have been able to expand on the amazing work of the Learning Disabilities Association of Sudbury and develop programs and services through our satellite offices in North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie and Timmins. Our workshops and services enhance and support the social and emotional wellbeing of children and youth with learning disabilities and their families as they navigate the education system.”

All learning disabilities can be addressed with success by honouring a student’s learning profile as well as providing appropriate accommodations.
