NEWS RELEASE

HURON-SUPERIOR CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD

**************************
The St. Mary’s College (SMC) Alumni Association has put forth the first donation to the ‘As One’ Campaign. Alumni Association President, Abbie DiDonato and Alumni Director, Harvey Barsanti presented a cheque for $50,000 to Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board (HSCDSB).

“Many of the alumni have such fond memories of their time at SMC, and have commented that their Catholic high school education and experiences had a profound and positive impact on their lives. Giving to As One is just one way that we can give back to a community and school that gave so much to us,” said DiDonato.

“It is great to see the SMC Alumni get the ‘As One’ Campaign going. They have always been proud supporters of St. Mary’s College and Catholic education. Their generosity is greatly appreciated,” said HSCDSB Director of Education, John Stadnyk.

The ‘As One’ Campaign is designed to raise four million dollars to fit-out a 500-seat theatre and install an artificial turf playing surface and rubberized track at the new St. Mary’s College, which is slated to open next September.

The SMC Alumni donation coincided with Homecoming Weekend which featured a variety of activities across the city.

The Board would like to thank all of the current staff of our secondary schools and board office and alumni from Mount St. Joseph College, St. Basil Secondary and St. Mary’s College who helped make the weekend a success by organizing and hosting events such as the Theatre SMC 25th Anniversary Gala.

A thank you also goes out to the students of our two secondary schools who spearheaded a food drive that included the greater Catholic community and saw over 1,500 kilograms of food collected for food banks at St. Vincent Place, the Soup Kitchen Community Centre and Salvation Army.

Our thanks also to Ken Whorpole at First Student Canada for providing a bus to receive and transport the food donations.

The Board greatly appreciates Bishop Plouffe and his brother priests for leading the ‘Serving As One’ liturgy at the Essar Centre and Sr. Clare Fitzgerald for her inspiring Homily.
