A brand new logo has been chosen and banners proclaiming the coming of Sault Ste. Marie's next high school are going up all over town, says Algoma District School Board Superintendent of Education Asima Vezina.

At a board meeting last night, Vezina showed trustees an example of what some of those banners will look like.

As seen, the logo for the new Steelhawks is prominent on the banner, along with the chosen blue, silver and white colours.

Vezina also told trustees the board is close to picking a date for an official groundbreaking ceremony.

So far, it's down to either February 10, 11 or 12 and the board is hoping to have Sault MPP David Orazietti and a representative of the Ministry of Education attend.

Vezina reported that construction on the new school is progressing well.

She said a letter went out to neighbours of the project reminding them there may be some noisy construction starting the last week of January and continuing about six to eight weeks.

Representatives of the board and its contractor, Bondfield Construction, also visited the Sault Finnish Resthome to let them know what was going on and what to expect, she said.

When the project is finished, Bondfield will be conducting a follow-up survey with neighbours.

************************* Update on construction and groundbreaking ceremony for Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School

Superintendent of Education Asima Vezina provided an update to trustees on Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School.

The groundbreaking ceremony for Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School is tentatively scheduled for February 10, 11 or 12 (pending confirmation of attendance of special ministry and government guests).

The ceremony will take place on-site (750 North Street) with presentations happening in the Bawating gymnasium, followed by an outdoor ground-breaking photo opportunity.

A list of invited guests and dignitaries is being confirmed.

In addition to planning for the groundbreaking ceremony, the school’s new identity has been one of the many important focuses in the past several months.

An extensive public campaign was held to name the new school and another to create a new logo and mascot.

Large banners will be on display at the ceremony that showcases the new logo (the Steelhawk) and the new school colours (blue, silver and white).

The banners, which also highlight many of the special program areas that will be part of Superior Heights Collegiate & Vocational School, will be on display at Bawating and Sir James Dunn feeder schools in the near future.

Since early January, Bondfield Construction has been on-site at North Street.

The foundation of Superior Heights C&VS will require approximately six to eight weeks of piling as part of the two-storey construction.

This work is anticipated to begin late January and will be conducted within the hours of 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

As a board we are very excited about the possibilities this building provides for our students and the value it adds to our community.

Should the public require any additional information about this project, they are encouraged to review updates on our website at www.adsb.on.ca/newschools
