The following is the first of three stories describing the Change the World: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge and its three highlighted community events aimed at promoting volunteerism among high school youth in Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma District.

Are you a student, or the parent of a student who needs volunteer hours to graduate high school?

What is your plan?

Volunteer Sault Ste. Marie and the United Way Youth Empowerment Council are here to help you.

Register now for the Clean Sweep Project!

On Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., teams of high school volunteers will be downtown on Queen Street to do some spring cleaning to ensure the area looks as great as it should.

Over the course of the afternoon, teams of volunteers will sweep the sidewalks, clean up litter, remove old event posters, and add to the visual enhancement of Queen Street.

This event is proudly supported by the Sault Downtown Association.

“Clean Sweep is a terrific idea,” said Tasha Varpio, manager of the Downtown Association. “Together we can do some good and have some fun.”

Unlike Queen Street, appreciation is a two-way Street.

Volunteers will help the Downtown and this project will help them.

All high school volunteers will be treated like royalty by the Downtown Association.

Prizes and lunch will be provided post-cleanup.

“This event is about community pride and actively engaging youth in the maintained beauty of our downtown,” said Rob Majury, project coordinator of Volunteer Sault Ste. Marie. “By volunteering you’ll not only be collecting mandatory volunteers hours but also show the impact a small group of youth can make over the course of just a couple hours.”

ChangeTheWorld: Ontario Youth Volunteer Challenge, celebrating its fifth year, is presented by the Ministry of Citizenship & Immigration.

This year, Volunteer Sault Ste. Marie has joined 25 other volunteer centres across Ontario to reach the goal of recruiting 25,000 Ontario Youth volunteers between April 15 and May 6, 2012.

All hours volunteered by local high school youth are recorded and credited towards their graduation; however, they must register in advance.

If you have any questions about how to get in on the action and Change The World, contact Rob Majury,  project coordinator at 705-256-7476,  ext. 207 or by email.
