The city has developed a strategic plan called "Grow the Sault," an initiative aimed at ensuring municipal growth occurs in a "sustainable and thriving manner."

The project includes a collection of ideas to lift the community's quality of life, including:

  • Housing Affordability: Focusing on enhancing housing affordability and housing supply growth.
  • Strategic Growth Nodes: Directing growth towards strategic and well-suited areas throughout the city.
  • Gentle Density: Streamlining the approvals process and reducing barriers to residential development.
  • Parking Reform: Reducing parking requirements to unlock new development opportunities.
  • Active Transportation: Enhancing the transportation network to accommodate all road users, including pedestrian and cyclists.

“As a thriving, growing community, we face new challenges and opportunities," said the city's director of planning, Peter Tonazzo, in a news release issued today. "The City of Sault Ste. Marie is working to unveil a vision that ensures our community continues to thrive in a fiscally and environmentally sustainable manner.”
