NEWS RELEASE

HURON-SUPERIOR CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD **************************** Celebrating a Sault Ste. Marie beacon

SAULT STE. MARIE - Students and staff of St. Basil Secondary School will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the erection of the tallest, illuminated, self-supporting cross in the western hemisphere.

The cross commemorates a similar cross, believed to have been erected on the same site 300 years earlier.

The 12-tonne cross was erected on May 14, 1960 by the St. Mary's College Men's Club as the site is the former home of St. Mary’s College.

On Friday morning at 9:25 a.m. a prayer service will commemorate the event.

The public is welcome to attend.

At the foot of the 37-metre cross on Moffly Hill is the Oasis of Peace Garden.

Lights on the cross make it visible in the night sky from 30 kilometers away.
