NEWS RELEASE

TERRY FOX RUN

*************************
2016 marks the 36th anniversary of the Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research not only in Canada, but furthermore across the entire globe.

Terry Fox started his Marathon of Hope on April 12, 1980 at the age of 22 after spending his late teen years in the hospital battling osteosarcoma – a form of bone cancer – which ultimately required the amputation of his right leg.

Terry’s experience in the hospitals, watching the suffering of kids younger than him drove him to take action for a change. “Somewhere the hurting must stop.” – Terry Fox

Initially Terry’s goal was to raise $1 for each Canadian; a target which has been long surpassed.

On September 1, 1980, after running more than 5,000 kms over 143 days Terry was forced to end his run, as his cancer had returned, this time to his lungs.

Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981, at the age of 23. That following September marked the First annual Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research.

We invite you to join us on Sunday, September 18 at the Roberta Bondar Pavilion to not only celebrate arguable one of Canada’s greatest heroes, but also to carry on Terry’s legacy, and dream of finding a cure to beat cancer.

As always, the Sault Ste. Marie event has no entry and no minimum donation – all are welcome!

This year we are excited to be hosting a by-donation pancake breakfast courtesy of Santini’s Bistro, with maple syrup donated by many of our local producers.

Registration will start at 8:30 a.m., opening ceremonies and warm-up at 9:40 a.m. with the 2, 5 or 10 km run starting at 10 a.m.

Everyone is encouraged to come run, walk or ride along our beautiful Boardwalk, and to take advantage of our kids’ zone with free face painting.

Plus, don’t forget to check out the silent auction tables with items from our local donors.

2015 proved to be our biggest year yet – with over 800 participants, and our SSM grand total reaching over $47,000!

We are always looking for as many participants to come out as possible! To pick up pledge forms or to buy t-shirts, please visit The Shoe Fits in The Station Mall.

Pledge forms can also be found at major grocery stores and banks.

To find out more information on the run, please visit our local Facebook page or contact us at [email protected]. Any online pledging or other information can be found at www.terryfox.org.

“I know that you can do the impossible” – Terry Fox
