NEWS RELEASE
SAULT COMMUNITY CAREER CENTRE
*************************
Sault Community Career Centre (SCCC) is urgently looking for volunteers and donations in the form of furniture, housewares, and clothing to help prepare for the arrival of refugee families to Sault Ste. Marie; they are expected to arrive before the end of 2018.

Since 2016, SCCC has welcomed over 100 refugees under the federal government’s Resettlement Assistance Program (RAP) and has also provided support services for over 40 privately sponsored refugees.

The success of our settlement efforts can be attributed to the volunteers who have provided a warm welcome, donated much-needed supplies like food and clothing, and offered additional services like transportation and language lessons. Our volunteers have helped create a supportive community for newcomers to feel welcomed and connected.

As a volunteer, your role will be to provide support to refugee families through their transition and offer assistance with the everyday tasks of life in Canada. You might help collect household items like towels and blankets, provide transportation to the grocery store or bank, assist them with travel to medical and dental appointments, and accompany them to welcome events in the community.

One of our volunteers said it best, “It’s a very rewarding experience, and you not only get to form a relationship with people from another culture, but also create relationships with other volunteers. It isn’t always easy, especially if you already have a busy agenda but the feeling you get when you can help people that truly need your help is unexplainable.”

The first of several orientation sessions for people interested in volunteering is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 29 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Sault Community Career Centre, 503 Queen Street East (corner of Queen/Spring).

If you would like to register or have any questions about volunteering or how to make a donation, please contact Brenda Cooper, Volunteer Coordinator, by email at [email protected] or call 705-542-9088.
