CANADIAN BLOOD SERVICES

************************* Donate blood in honour of emergency service workers

NORTHERN ONTARIO - (April 14) - Canadian Blood Services are encouraging Northern Ontario Residents to donate blood at their community blood donor clinic during the month of April in support of their emergency services’ workers.

During the month of April, local police, fire and emergency medical services will be attending blood donor clinics as part of the Sirens for Life campaign.

The Sirens for Life campaign is a partnership between Canadian Blood Services and local emergency services to raise awareness and to encourage blood donation.

On average, every minute of every day, someone in Canada requires blood.

Emergency services personnel often see first hand the need for blood as a result of the emergencies they encounter in the course of their day to day duties.

This campaign challenges local emergency response workers to recruit the most blood donors in order to become this year’s Sirens for Life champions.

Staff, friends and family are encouraged to donate blood in Parry Sound, Elliot Lake, Blind River, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, North Bay and Timmins throughout the month of April.

The true winners of this campaign will be the recipients of blood products.

One blood donation can save up to three lives.

“By donating blood and encouraging others around you to donate in support of our emergency service workers, you can give someone their life back,” said Steven Tipman, Canadian Blood Services director of donor and clinic services, North/East Ontario and Nunavut.

The Sirens for Life campaign initially began in Sudbury in the summer of 2000.

This campaign has since grown into an annual event that is hosted in several communities across Northern Ontario, including: Sudbury, North Bay, Timmins and Sault Ste. Marie.
