An elderly man from Sault Ste. Marie was airlifted to Toronto around 8:30 a.m. Saturday after suffering serious injuries in what's believed to have been a propane explosion at Busy Beaver Campground at Twin Lakes on St. Joseph Island.

The man and an injured elderly woman were taken first to Matthews Memorial Hospital at Richards Landing before the man was transferred to Sault Area Hospital.

The man suffered burns to as much as 30 percent of his body and Dr. Robert Armstrong travelled with him in the ambulance.

The Hilton Union Fire Department received the call at 11:38 p.m. last night.

It took 15 to 20 minutes to put out the flames and firefighters remained at the scene until 2 a.m.

The trailer (shown in this photo supplied by Bob Tisdall) was destroyed by the explosion.

The Ontario Fire Marshall's office will be at the scene this afternoon to investigate the cause.

The flames caused minor damage to nearby trees and an adjacent trailer received minor damage.

The Hilton Union Fire Department commended campground residents for preventing major damage to the second trailer by spraying it with water, and for caring for the burn victims before the ambulance arrived.
