President George W. Bush has commuted the sentences of Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean, two former U.S. Border Patrol agents convicted in the 2005 shooting of a Mexican drug smuggler, U.S. networks reports.

Osvaldo Aldrete Davila attempted to flee Compean and Ramos at a Texas border crossing when he was shot in the buttocks.

Davila confessed that he had been smuggling hundreds of pounds of marijuana that day.

Supporters of the border patrol agents claimed Compean and Ramos were just doing their duty.

Bush used his last full day in office to commute Ramos's 11-year prison sentence and Compean's 12-year prison sentence.

Both now expire on March 20.
