Break-ins prompt police to step-up patrols

CITY POLICE NEWS RELEASE

************************* The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is investigating five reports of break and enters that occurred during the early morning hours (3:30 a.m. to 5:30 a.m.).

In the incidents which occurred in the central and west end of the city involved culprits going into homes where the home owners were home sleeping.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service is concerned that this type of incident is taking place and advise homeowners to take extra precaution in securing their homes.

Some suggested safety steps are:

- If an intruder is located in your home do not confront the suspect: Call 911 immediately

- Install motion-sensors around your home

- Secure all doors and windows; don’t leave doors unlocked and have a locking device for bedroom windows.

- Ensure that mail/milk boxes that allow access to inside doors are secured from the inside.

- Don’t have house/car keys visible from outside or hanging near entrances.

- Report any suspicious activities to police as a soon as possible.

In the most recent incidents, the intruder(s) were after cash and/or electronics – no one was injured.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service will be increasing patrols in residential areas during these early morning hours.
