************************* Sault Ste. Marie OPP Marine Unit kept busy

Distress call on St. Marys River

ST. MARYS RIVER, ON - On Juky 4, 2010, at 10:30 p.m., OPP Marine officers aboard the Thomas B. O’Grady were notified of a vessel in distress off of Topsail Island.

OPP responded immediately.

The vessel in distress was a green and white 17-foot Starcraft that had run aground on some rocks.

There were two people on board, a male and female who were uninjured.

The Canadian Coast Guard and Sault Search and Rescue were notified and en route to assist.

At 11:14 p.m. the vessel managed to get off the rocks and was escorted to Bellevue Marina.

The vessel operator advised that he was not aware that the buoys were not lit up in the water at night and ended up going off course and running his vessel up on the rocks.

Throughout the long weekend, there were five charges laid under the Small Vessel Regulation Act by the Sault Ste. Marie OPP Marine Unit.

************************* Male charged with assault

HAVILLAND TWP, ON - At approximately 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2010, Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment Officer’s were called to a residence in the 700 block of Havilland Shores Drive regarding an alleged assault.

A verbal argument ensued between a 41-year-old female who was driving a vehicle and a 19-year-old male (both known to each other) who was walking on the side of the roadway.

The 19-year-old male then allegedly smashed the mirror off the driver’s side door and punched the victim in the face.

The accused, 19-year-old Curtis Belohoubek of Springbank Drive in London, Ontario was arrested and charged with assault and mischief under $5,000.

The accused was released on a promise to appear for court on August 9, 2010.

************************* Male arrested for assault

AWERES TWP, ON - On July 4, 2010, at 2 a.m., Sault Ste. Marie OPP officers were dispatched to a residence on Trout Lake Road in Aweres Township with regards to an assault complaint.

Investigation revealed that a 25-year-old female victim had allegedly been physically assaulted by a 25-year-old male party by being knocked to the ground and received injuries to her lower lower back and head area.

The victim did not require medical attention.

The 25-year-old male accused was arrested and charged with assault and being intoxicated in a public place and is being held pending a bail hearing today in Sault Ste. Marie provincial court.
