An early-rising SooToday.com reader sent us this picture of this morning's big blowdown at Algoma Steel's No. 7 blast furnace.

It started at 6 a.m. today and is expected to last until around 10 p.m.

The shutdown's part of a rebuild of the big furnace that will take somewhere between 25 to 30 days.

You can expect a lot of noise from the site today.

Algoma Steel says it's taking precautionary measures, but "a slight increase in emissions" is possible.

It's the first major maintenance on #7 since 1995.

"The July outage is necessary in order to complete remediation work to the furnace lining and tap holes, maintaining its reliability and bridging its operating capability," the company says.

SooToday.com is interested in how far away the blowdown can be heard.
