At approximately 7:45 p.m., Sault Fire Services responded to reports of smoke coming from a residential building on the corner of East Street and Albert Street East.
Upon arrival, fire crews attended the second floor of the East Street Residence building, where black smoke could be seen coming from the second floor.
After entering the apartment, emergency crews did not find anybody inside, and the fire knocked itself out soon after.
In the meantime, a man in a wheelchair was located at Queen Street East and Brock Street with potential burns, and he is believed to be a resident in the affected apartment. Members of the emergency medical services attended to the individual.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and an investigation is now underway.
