Bikers roll through Sault to help those dealing with PTSD

The CEO of The Rolling Barrage, which is stopping overnight in Sault, has been inspired by a military family member, friends

A group of approximately 20 motorbike enthusiasts rolled into Sault Ste. Marie on Monday afternoon for a good cause.

The bikers were Canadian veterans and supporters of The Rolling Barrage, travelling across the country to raise funds and awareness for veterans needing treatment for PTSD.

To any veteran dealing with PTSD, Paul Harman, Rolling Barrage CEO of events, said, “we’re here for you,” speaking to SooToday.

Harman said The Rolling Barrage raised approximately $70,000 from its cross-Canada ride last year for PTSD treatment.

“We want to make sure the right care is going out there,” Harman said.

This year’s Rolling Barrage trek started Aug. 1 in Halifax, aiming to reach Burnaby, BC, by Aug. 20.

The Barrage raises funds along the way through donations by supportive members of the public and through its online presence.

It also raises funds through sales of online merchandise.

Monday’s arrival far exceeded that of last year in regard to weather conditions, despite rain in the Sault and area.

“It was definitely better than rolling through the edge of a tornado,” Harman said good-naturedly, referring to 2021 weather conditions as The Barrage roared into town last year.

Harman said he has been inspired to get involved with The Barrage by a family member who served with the Canadian Forces as a medic in Afghanistan and by a friend who served in The Balkans.

Harman, an Ottawa-based Royal Canadian Air Force technician, said he has also been inspired to join the group by Canada’s stellar combat role at Vimy Ridge in the First World War.

The core group of 20 riders was met by approximately 10 Sault and area motorbiking supporters as they rode into the Sault on Monday.

The Barrage group arrived at The Water Tower Inn, planning to stay the night at the local hotel before resuming their journey Tuesday.
