********************* International Bridge sheds new light on security
December 2, 2005 - The International Bridge will soon be shining a bit brighter. High-intensity flood lights are being installed to illuminate portions of the structure below the bridge at the arch spans to increase security. "The sections of the bridge in the vicinity of the Canadian and U.S. shipping channels will have increased illumination," said Phil Becker, International Bridge Administration general manager. "We wanted to let the public know to expect new lighting on portions of the understructure of the bridge."
The lighting is part of a $1.3 million security enhancement project currently under way at the structure which connects Sault Ste. Marie, Mich, and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. All of the new lights will be operational in December. The security project will be functional in early 2006.
Traffic is not being impacted by the work.
The project funding is split between bridge toll revenue and a U.S Homeland Security grant.
