They showed up at the Riuniti Hall today in Wes Hill's 1951 Chrysler.

Bette Furkey was wearing a wedding ring that her husband George gave her on July 23, 1936.

She was also wearing a ring that George gave her 20 years ago at their 50th wedding anniversary.

And tonight, both Bette and George were sporting brand-new diamond rings commemorating their 70th anniversary, celebrated tonight with about 450 family and friends.

"They are a remarkable couple, and always on the go," says grandson Dan Boston.

"I would think that my grandfather is the one of the oldest active member of the Elks in Canada, maybe North America," says Dan. "They also hit the casino two or three times a week, enjoy attending local car racing and other events when not maintaining their home. At a recent wedding my grandmother was the last one to leave the dance floor. I don't know where they get their stamina. They must be machines."

The couple had a grocery store in the late 1940s and 1950s at the corner of Second Line and Turner Avenue.

They've lived in the same house Pointe Aux Pines for 50 years.

Bette is 88.

George is 90.

Bette and George were both present when the old Memorial Gardens was commemorated in February 1949, and family members presented them tonight with a brass anniversary plaque to be displayed in the new Sault Ste. Marie Sports and Entertainment Facility.

When SooToday.com left the Riuniti tonight, the happy couple was dancing the night away.
