The Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) is organizing what it hopes will be the world's biggest garage sale this fall.

The organization is to begin work on its palliative care facility later this week.

But it's still in great need of funds to build the facility, says Ward 1 Councillor Steve Butland.

Butland and Steelback Brewery CEO Frank D'Angelo (both shown) were at Casino Sault Ste. Marie yesterday to kick off registration for one humongous garage sale.

The World's Largest Yard Sale is being arranged for September 15 all across Sault Ste. Marie.

And everyone is encouraged to get involved.

Participants are asked to register at a cost of $20, pick up their T-shirt and sign and get selling on September 15.

"If you do really well at your sale, then we ask that you donate maybe five percent or so, whatever you can, to ARCH," said Butland.

"Or better yet, donate all of it, if you can," chimed in D'Angelo. "It's a great cause to help people take care of their own in their last days."

D'Angelo started the donation pool with a $1,000 donation and a promise for a huge celebration after the sale at the Steelback Centre.

He also volunteered his Steelback 2-4 Band to entertain and promised prizes from Steelback Breweries for best neighbourhood and best ward.

ARCH is accepting registrations starting today.

To find out more, call the office at 942-1556.

Registration packages will also be available online from a new website soon to be launched courtesy of Frank D'Angelo.

ARCH is building a 10-bed home-like facility to serve the needs of dying individuals and their families, says project coordinator Helen Ross.

A skilled palliative care team will provide as much or as little compassionate care as the family and the dying person desires or needs, Ross said.

The hospice will provide an option to individuals and their families who, for whatever reason, cannot die at home but don't wish to die in hospital, she said.
