************************* Notice to the public.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service’s Distracted Driving Initiative will begin today.

As part of this initiative officers will be enforcing the law in relation to the use of mobile communication devices throughout the city through increased selective enforcement.

This week, Traffic Services with the assistance of Patrol Services will be concentrating their efforts in the city’s East End.

The Highway Traffic Act section 78.1(1) states the following:

78.1 (1) No person shall drive a motor vehicle on a highway while holding or using a hand-held wireless communication device or other prescribed device that is capable of receiving or transmitting telephone communications, electronic data, mail or text messages.

The set fine for this act is $155.
